Hürrem Sultan Hamam: An Experience Touching History

By SU Magazin / 2024-05-30

Hürrem Sultan Hamam is a historical Turkish bath located between Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque in Istanbul. The bath was built between 1556-1557 by Hürrem Sultan, the wife of Suleiman the Magnificent, to Mimar Sinan.

History

The ruins of the Zeuksippos Baths were previously located where the Hürrem Sultan Baths were built. The construction of the bath was completed in 1556 and it was first put into service in 1557. It was used as a bathhouse until 1910 and then closed. Restored in 1954, the bathhouse started to serve as a bath again in 1958.

Architecture

Hürrem Sultan Bath was built in the classical Ottoman bath architecture style. Some elements from the Byzantine Zeuksippos Baths were used during the construction of the bath. It is rumored that Mimar Sinan was also educated in the madrasah, which is part of the bath complex. In the 19th century, it was used as a tobacco warehouse for a while. In the early 20th century, it was restored and put into service as a bath again.

The main building of the bath consists of two parts: men's bath and women's bath. Both sections consist of a changing room, a warmth room, a cold room and a scrubbing room.

Hürrem Sultan Hamam offers traditional Turkish bath services today. Various services such as scrub, foam massage and oil massage are provided in the hammam. There is also a restaurant, cafe and souvenir shop in the hammam.
